Praying together every night has become such a normal part of our night that I can’t even remember how long ago we started doing it. I remember it being a little uncomfortable at first but now we can’t go to sleep unless we pray together. I do know that we started it before we had our beautiful baby girl. I am SOOO glad we started BEFORE we had her because even on the most stressful of nights with a new born…. or when we had only had 3 hours of sleep for the past day or 2… we still managed to pray together every night.
Some nights seemed holier than others because of our lack of sleep…. but the prayers were still heard by our merciful heavenly Father.
Why do we pray together every night?
Let me think back to around when we start this…. I think it was about 3 years ago. We started leading a Bible study for married couples and knew that meant our marriage would be a target of the devil. So, we decided a simple way to keep ourselves connected and on the same page would be to pray together every night before one of us went to bed. My handsome hubby usually (99%) of the time goes to bed before me as I am a night owl. Praying together gave us a moment together.
When we started we had no clue how important this practice would be… and how much it would help our relationship. It didn’t take us long to realize doing this every night had a major impact on our lives. Each night when we would pray together we would each learn something about the other person. Our prayers start with my husband praying about things on his heart… and then he will squeeze my hand or tap me and I know it’s my turn to pray… when I’m done I’ll squeeze or tap and he will close the prayer….usually with a “In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
When he would pray about things on his heart… I would get to hear things on his heart! Things that he had not purposefully kept from me but just had not shared because the moment never came up or I was not around when he thought of them. So, I got to learn what he was going thru and dealing with and then I could pray for him throughout the day the next day. The same was true for me… I would pray and he would learn whats on my heart. It is so important to know what is on your spouses heart.
Praying together helps remind us that we are on the same team.
It reminds us that we need to pray FOR each other not ABOUT each other. Wondering what the difference is? here….
PRAYING FOR:
Lord, I pray that you would guide my husband today. keep him safe. give him Your wisdom and direction and pave his steps with Your favor! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
PRAYING ABOUT:
Lord, please help my husband to see that I am right. Show him how wrong he is and make him apologize. Amen.
Do you see the difference now? Pray like you are praying for yourself…. because you are! You are married and that makes you one!
Praying together helps us know we are appreciated by one another. I try to thank God for my husband every night during my turn to pray… not out of obligation but because I really mean it and I also want to make sure my husband knows it… so if I have not told him lately that he means the world to me he at least hears it once before he goes to sleep!
Praying together leads us to rejoicing together more often! When we thank God in our prayers together we get to celebrate God’s faithfulness together too!
I say all that to say that praying together every night is a bonding experience like no other. We get to share in each other’s thankfulness as well as our sorrows. It has brought our marriage to a deeper level in Christ. It has helped us to be better than when we were newlyweds. #BeBetter
